Our Rating

There are lots of stationary bikes out there to choose from. If you decide to look for an upright bike, you’ll need to know what kinds of features make it distinct from a recumbent bike or even an elliptical.

A few things that most upright bikes have in common is:

  • A padded seat with no backrestpadded seat with no backrest
  • Long handles to rest your arms on while working out
  • Different resistance levels
  • Display(s) to read information about your workout

An upright bike can offer a more effective workout than a recumbent bike.

While recumbent bikes allow you to sit back and recline in a bicycle seat that has a backrest, an upright bike has a seat with no backrest. This makes the user flex their core muscles while working out so they can maintain their balance on the seat.

A few things that help the Schwinn 170 Upright Bike stand out from the crowd include:

  • 29 different workout programs
  • Dual LCD displays to read information
  • 25 different levels of resistance
  • Conveniently placed heart rate grip

This bike also has a familiar Schwinn feature – dual LCD displays. The console features 2 blue backlit LCD window displays where you can read different types of workout feedback. The displays are 3″ by 5″ and 1″ by 5″.

Onboard the console, you also have some other cool features besides the dual LCD screens. There is a 3-speed fan built into the console that cools you off during your workout. There are also two small built-in speakers that provide big and clear sound.

Things We Like

One specific feature that we unexpectedly found on the bike was Bluetooth capability.

This feature makes it a breeze to sync your fitness data to Schwinn Connect and MyFitnessPal. If you don’t want to use a USB cable to transfer your data, you can use the wireless Bluetooth option to do so.

We also like the oversized quality drink holder on the side of the bike. Not only can it hold your water bottle, but it can also hold your phone, music player, or even your tablet.

The lightly padded handlebars on either side of the console are comfortable to lean on while exercising. They are lightly padded to ensure your arms don’t become fatigued from resting on them. A stable workout platform is provided by a sturdy bicycle frame and a high-speed, high-inertia perimeter weighted flywheel.

Another thing we liked about this bike is that it is surprisingly quiet. The bike features a high-speed high-inertia perimeter-weighted flywheel that makes very little noise as you exercise which is an attractive thing for a customer.

Things We Don’t Like

The bike’s instructions lack some clarity. You will have to really take your time when setting up the bike to ensure you put it together correctly.

The calorie and travel time counters may be a little off when tracking your workout.

Because people vary in their weights and level of workout intensity, the number of calories you burn per workout, as well as the time it takes you to reach certain goals, will vary. The bike seems to give users an estimated number of calories burned and an approximate travel time rather than exact measurements for this data.
