Since mountain biking is such an expensive hobby, it's essential to figure out how much does a mountain bike cost and what is you're willing to pay for a bike before you start looking. After all, the price will greatly affect your decision on what features and components are most important. The cheapest bikes generally come in at around $200-300 for a complete bicycle that includes shifters and brakes. The more expensive models can reach up to $2,500 or more.

There are several varients of MTB's and mountain bike cost can differ from one other. So, let’s take a look at what bikes and gears cost, to give you an idea about the initial costs:

Entry-level Hardtail Cost

A budget entry-level mountain bike will cost you between $400 to $800. It’ll only have basic features and a hardtail, so it won’t be suitable for serious trails. A budget bike can be upgraded later on and that way you can get more than what you pay for one with better parts. It is about the same as going to the gym for a year.

Mid-range Hardtail Cost

A good mid-range mountain bike will cost you between $1,000 to $2,000. You’ll have a front suspension and good components. A mid-range bike will be great for casual riding or trail riding on tougher terrains. The one downside is that you may need to upgrade the parts on your bike over time because they eventually wear out from use or because some parts just aren’t that great.

Entry-level Full Suspension Cost

At the lower end of the scale, there are companies that specialize in entry-level full-suspension bikes for just a few hundred dollars. If you know what to look for in these low-priced models, they can be quite reliable and affordable. Full suspension bikes with a similar, entry-level price range include, among others, the Specialized Camber Comp 3.0 ($500), Giant Reign Comp 7.2 ($450), and Giant TCR Advanced 3 (US$399).

Mid-Range Full Suspension Cost

At the mid-price range, full-suspension bikes start to get quite a bit pricier. The Specialized Stump-jumper FSR comp is a great example of an affordable mid-range full suspension bike for this price range. A good mountain bike can range from $1000 to $6000.

Here’s Why a Decent mountain bike Cost a Lot

You’ve probably heard mountain bikes are expensive. But do you know? You can spend up to $5,000 for a high-quality one, indoors. And that’s not even the most expensive bike you can buy! You could get an $80,000 carbon triathlon bike with a titanium frame for just under $10,000 if you had the cash to spare.

A good mountain bike costs more than other styles of bikes because of its ruggedness and durability.  The bottom price may get affected by the purchase of gears required for bike.

So how much do those parts cost?

The components that you need for a good MTB are expensive; however, they all serve one function. They make your ride better. The parts that you need to think about include the frame (up to $4000), wheels (from $300 to $3000), tires (up to $100), brakes and drive train as well as handlebars, grips and pedals. As with most things, if you spend money on high-end parts it will be money well spent because the workmanship is better than cheaper ones.

And as it is recommended to wear safety gears to prevent any accident, it might add few dollars to it too.
