When you are choosing a hybrid bike that is going to go up mountain trails, down rocky slopes and then immediately transition into riding across campus or hitting the asphalt of your local city streets, you want to get one of the best available and not break the bank at the same time.

Choosing the best possible hybrid bike can be challenging, though, because manufacturers have begun calling any and every bike a hybrid. That doesn’t mean the bikes they're selling work well on multiple surfaces, though, and some manufacturers are misleading customers into thinking that their mountain bike are hybrids when they actually perform very poorly on the road.

Through extensive research, we have been able to narrow down the quality bikes to just a few of the best hybrid bikes for under $1000 and the original Insight from Diamondback is one of the few that made our cuts.

The original Diamondback Insight is currently one of the most popular hybrid bikes available and many reviewers labeled it the bike of the year in 2015, when it was initially released.

With all of the features that were offered by Diamondback, and how well it performed on a  wide variety of surfaces, it has been a customer favorite ever since it was released.

The Insight features an upright riding posture and flat cockpit which makes for a really smooth ride and a bike that is easy to control. The Kenda Kwick Trax 700x32c road tires make it just as effective on dirt or rocky trails as it is on pavement or asphalt.

High-quality Shimano parts, like the front and rear derailers ,make this bike a perfect example of quality construction and design, combining the best of both Diamondback and Schwinn.

This bike features alloy linear brakes and, while the Insight 2 was upgraded to disc brakes, the original Insight still maintains a high rank among Diamondback customers.

Let’s take a look at some of the features that the Insight offers.

  • Shimano front and rear derailers
  • Aero Hi-Ten Steel Straight Blade fork
  • EF-51 Easyfire 7spd shifter from Shimano
  • DB Toe Clip Compatible Platform pedals
  • DB performance hybrid seat with gel
  • Diamondback Dual Density Comfort Grips
  • Owner’s manual

How's the bike performing?

What makes this bike so popular is the level of quality, research, and development that Diamondback has packed into it while still keeping the price competitive.

You can check out bike forums and message boards where enthusiasts gather and ask about the Insight, and you’ll find that, almost universally, people love this Diamondback model.

Even though it is priced far lower than $1000, every single component from the spokes of the back wheel to the reflector on the front of the frame is made with quality and performance in mind.

Diamondback is a friend you can trust and the Insight is probably the best bike that they currently offer. For most people, the results are nothing short of amazing.

what do customers say

There aren’t very many reviews on this bike yet but the ones that are there are pretty amazing. Every single person who has reviewed this bike rated the Insight at four stars or higher and most of them rated it a perfect 5 out of 5 stars.

Some of the things that people said they loved about the original Insight included how easy it was to put together and how convenient having the tools needed for assembly included with the package was.

They also mentioned how smooth the bike was and how easy it is to ride.

What to watch out for before buying this bike

One thing that you want to keep in mind is that there are actually two Insight bikes that are on the market. One of these bikes has alloy linear brakes (the original Insight, this bike) and the other has a version of the disc brakes that are included on the new Insight 2.

You will have to check the listing to determine which of these two bikes you are getting.  Most riders aren't going to be able to notice a performance difference between the two, but the disc brakes do tend to last longer and perform slightly better under a wide range of conditions.

The price is going to be about the same either way and if what you really want is the disc brakes feature, the Insight 2 is a little lower in price right now than the original Insight, so you may want to go with the newer model instead.

buying advice

When you buy a bike online one of the problems that you normally have to deal with is getting it shipped to your door. In the case of the Diamondback Insight, you can either choose to have it shipped partly assembled or you can have it assembled and then shipped to you, ready to ride.

Both of these options are offered on websites like Amazon.

What you'll need to think about, though, is that you are going to pay more for the shipping if you order it completely assembled. In fact, you could actually get free shipping on the partly assembled bike if you signed up for Amazon Prime.

my recommendation - should you buy this bike?

So, can we recommend the original Insight from Diamondback?

Absolutely.

This is one of the best hybrid bikes available right now and it is certainly one of only a few that you can get for under $1000 and still be extremely satisfied with the quality.

With all of the features, quality components and design hours that make up this hybrid, it is very easy to recommend that you get one – especially since it is offered with disc brakes just like the Insight 2.
